The New Shuksan Middle School completed construction just in time for the 2009 school year. The new building was constructed on the same site as the existing school, built in 1954. This was done to allow the students to remain on-site with minimal disruptions and transitional costs. The new school also acts as a community center for an area of Bellingham that is lacking in this type of amenity. This 2-story building is divided into shared public/community use areas such as the library, commons, kitchen and gymnasium, while the educational areas are separated allowing for easier evening access and keeping the remainder of the building secure. HVAC and lighting systems are separately controlled in these areas to minimize energy costs.
