Location:
Bellingham, WA
Size:
Client:
Whatcom Community College

This award-winning building on Whatcom Community College’s Cordata Campus blends two distinctly different programs - the Adult Education program and the Early Childhood Education program.  It also blends the modern brick and steel materials found on the adjacent Fine Arts Center with a warm, intimate environment suitable for young pre-school children.  The single level Child Care portion of the building forms one-half of an “L” shaped floor plan, the other half being a more traditional two-story classroom wing.  The “L” shape wraps around a secure play area, oriented toward the Mount Baker views and shielding the children from prevailing southwesterly winds. The double-loaded corridor in the classroom wing opens up on the south end to provide informal gathering   areas, with expansive areas of glass providing views of the rest of campus to the south and Mount Baker to the east.
